Lets start off by saying you are already a photographer you have been practicing and shooting for months now. You are taking crisp pictures and your video footage is coming out clear, you feel like you are ready to take some clients. You make some business cards and start to advertise on facebook, instagram and snapchat making posters and setting prices. You wait to be contacted by some people and hope to get some work. You have a couple of inquiries but nothing too serious to make any money.. You start to lose hope and see other people getting business and start flaunting their work all over social media... What do you do?. The first thing is do not panic in an area like The DMV (DC,Maryland and Virgina) you have many people in this field. Especially photography people who have been doing it for years have already established rapport and have a name for themselves. It makes it hard for new freelancers to get their name out there. The best thing you can do is just start taking pictures of cityscapes, nature and animals. Taking pictures of family members as well the main thing you want to do is make sure all your pictures and videos are all high quality. Do little things that change your work from everybody else's. Make a unique logo to tag all your pictures with that way when someone posts your picture they can see your logo and link you to it. Sometimes working with more popular photographers and shadowing them helps too. Get to know the business through someone who is in it already and working daily. Ask them questions and see what they do in order to get out there more, taking pictures of how they work and behind the scenes. Get a sense of what the life is, being with these people can also make some strong connections for yourself in the future. Another thing you can do is not give up easily just because you are not being contracted it does not mean you are not good. Most people give up too fast or get discouraged, If you love being part of this field its not always going to be very simple. Just keep your head up and always keep shooting.
